“What’s Under Things?”

This temporary exhibit features rarely seen clothing and fashion pieces from the permanent collection. The exhibit centers on the basic components, or underwear, of colonial dress. Featured items include two rare surviving corsets, one from the 17th century with a traditional ownership attributed to Mayflower passenger Mary Chilton Winslow and the other an 18th century working class corset. Other major pieces include the “Brewster stocking,” a lace stomacher, a sleeve, wood and metal pattens, several shoes, and associated items.
